New Album Update, week of March 14, 2022

I'm starting to hit a rhythm with the parts that I'm practicing for the first few sessions. I mean that in many senses, of course. I will be recording a lot of instrumental parts before I start recording vocal parts. Having a lot of instrumental parts to record means I have a lot of instrumental parts to practice. I've been concerned that I might get out of shape vocally if I'm practicing a lot of instrumental parts. I decided to address that by singing the words or other parts of the songs that I am practicing the instrumental parts for while I practice them. That has been so great! One of the things that has been so great about it is that it has made it feel more like I'm practicing a song, rather than just a part. One of my favorite drummers that I ever played with told me that when he solos, he sings the melody of the song he's soloing over. I used to see him doing it, and he took some amazing solos and he was an amazing drummer. I remember that conversation so clearly, and I think about it all the time, both consciously and subconsciously. The way that I am practicing the instrumental parts for my new album brings me back to that in a way that I like. The gear situation is still something to get around, but hopefully I'll have that taken care of this week then I can start recording. That is very exciting, a little scary too—there is something a bit frightening about putting something out into the world that will be there forever—but the excitement makes everything worth it!
